New York remains the most walkable city in the nation, according to Redfin staffer Amy Musser. The city increased its Walk Score by 1.3 points to 88.9 and held the top spot for most walkable city in the U.S. New York was followed by San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia, and Miami in the top five.
In comparison to last year’s ranking, Long Beach, Calif., pushed Baltimore off the list and slid in at number 10, the only Southern California city to make the top 10 list. Long Beach also increased its score by 3.2 points, the largest yearly increase of all ten cities. All of the top 10 cities saw an increase in Walk Score ratings from 2015, and only two of the top 50 most walkable cities, Honolulu and Columbus, Ohio, improved by less than a point. Omaha, Neb., had the largest year-over-year increase of the 50 most walkable cities with a 4.3 point improvement.
“Improving a city’s Walk Score takes work. In these communities, construction crews have built an invitation for walking,” said Eric Scharnhorst, livability analyst at Redfin. “Safer sidewalks are now connected to a greater variety of everyday amenities. This creates opportunities for both local businesses and families.“
