Industry input is being sought on a product category rule (PCR) for concrete that has been developed by researchers from the University of Washington’s College of Built Environment’s Carbon Leadership Forum. PCRs are used in the calculation of life-cycle environmental effects. The Carbon Leadership Forum is seeking input from architects, concrete suppliers, engineers, material manufacturers, as well as life-cycle assessment and environmental scientists via its website, where the standard is posted.

The Carbon Leadership Forum seeks to develop PCRs that comply with ISO 14025, CEN 15804, and ASTM WK23356. The draft PCR for concrete was developed to support the objectives of the Architecture 2030 Challenge for Products, to enable reporting of carbon footprints, to address allocation methods consistent with Environmental Protection Agency policy, address uncertainty in data, and provide guidelines to make implementation rigorous and simple. It was developed between May 2011 and January 2012.
