AirRenew Essential, CertainTeed

Can wallboard capture and convert VOCs? CertainTeed says it’s found a way.

Low-VOC finishes and building products aren’t hard to find—but what about a product that claims to be able to absorb VOCs found in the air and convert them into inert compounds that stay inside the wall? CertainTeed says its AirRenew wallboard can do just that. Released in late 2010, the company recently added AirRenew Essential to the lineup, bringing what it calls “VOC-scavenging technology” into the residential new construction and retrofit space. Containing 99% recycled content, the boards are certified to Greenguard’s Gold standard and are offered in a ½”-thick standard version as well as a 5/8”-thick, fire-resistant version. The proprietary technology is compatible with most breathable wallpapers and water-based acrylic paints. certainteed.com
