Located on a prominent street corner in downtown Aspen, Colorado, the White House Tavern site includes two historic buildings: a miner's cabin and an alley shed. The miner's cabin was originally constructed in 1883, is a registered historic landmark in the City of Aspen and has been used for both commercial and residential purposes. The Hillstone Restaurant Group acquired the building in order to convert into a restaurant. The team worked extensively with the City of Aspen Historic Preservation Commission to restore and rehabilitate these structures. Careful space planning and exceptional details were the most important goals for the interiors. Fusing the aesthetic of both new and existing features lends to the originality of this project: a modern brick oven addition on the back side of the miner’s cabin houses the exhibition kitchen; keeping the interior fireplace in its original location within the cabin is an inviting element at the bar. The precise balance of the materials palette, wood paneling, reclaimed wood flooring, artwork, historic accents and high-end lighting sets were carefully executed to provide a sense of comfort, quality and timelessness.
