Project Description

Designed in 1991, the House with Studio is a glass pavilion suited for living and working, with a magnificent view of the lake surrounds. In 2003, the house was extended to incorporate the adjacent 19th century brick terrace house. The use of flexible floor plans anticipates the changing needs of the inhabitants.

A composition of small, flexible rooms in the house suits the family’s needs. These rooms are mostly open, resulting in one continuous space. A private studio space on the ground floor opens onto a serene Japanese garden. The lively first floor, with the kitchen and living room, overlooks the Kralingse Plas. In the adjacent building, the open layout features a spacious bedroom and workspace. The two houses are connected on the ground and second floors.

Diverse materials such as stone, concrete, glass, steel and various types of wood lend the house a range of atmospheres from openness to intimacy. Contrasting elements – hard and soft, modest and luxurious – enhance each other, while inside and outside merge freely. A metal and timber stairs joins the first floor with the upstairs gallery-library.
