Coinciding with the Civil War sesquicentennial, Mills + Schnoering Architects (M+Sa) provided stabilization and conservation services of Clara Barton’s Civil War-era apartment and office for The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross, operated the office between 1865 and 1868.
M+Sa provided full architectural services including an interior historic structure report; recommendations for appropriate conservation treatments; construction oversight; and construction documents for the conservation work. The firm also designed the museum space and a museum quality climate control system, while conserving historical aspects of the original rooms.
