PEOPLE: architect, Tigerman McCurry Architects, Chicago, and consultant, Earth Pledge, New YorkGREEN POINTS: As part of the largest continuously operating homeless shelter in the U.S., the 16,000-square-foot (1486-m2) green-roof system incorporates a solar-reflective membrane and vegetated grids. A highly reflective white membrane was used to frame the vegetated areas and deflect heat build-up. Gravel surfacing protects against physical abuse and UV damage. The vegetated areas capture up to 99 percent of a 1-inch (25-mm) rainfall. Today, the roof provides a 25 percent reduction of storm-water runoff. The Rosemont, Ill.-based National Roofing Contractors Association recently awarded this project the SpecRight Excellence in Design Award.
