The buildings’ uniqueness lies in their portability. As the mine expands and changes, the buildings can be combined with other modules to create larger or smaller buildings through reassembly. The buildings sit at an elevation of more than 6,000 feet (1825 m). In the administration building, two-thirds of the doors, frames and hardware used was salvaged from the previous mine-office building. In the visitor center, 30 percent of building materials were salvaged and reused by picking the existing building off its foundation and transporting it to the new center.
