A month-long exhibition featuring 98 projects designed, engineered, or constructed by women will run at New York City’s Center for Architecture from March 2- April 11. The exhibition, dubbed BxW NYC—the BxW stands for Built by Women—will visually map female-driven work across the dense, urban landscape of the City to increase awareness of the many diverse and significant contributions women make to the built environment.
Last fall, the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation (BWAF) announced a public competition for submissions of projects produced by women. From a pool of 350 entries, the jury selected a final set of 98 projects that best reflect strong design, have historical or cultural significance, or demonstrate substantial social or community impact.
The BxW NYC jury was composed of professionals in the architecture, landscape, engineering and construction industries including: Deborah Berke, FAIA, principal at Deborah Berke Partners; Joan Blumenfeld, FAIA, principal & global interior design director at Perkins + Will; Aine Brazil, managing principal at Thornton Tomasetti; Fiona Cousins, principal at Arup; Cheryl McKissack Daniel, president & CEO of McKissack & McKissack; Andrea Leers, FAIA, principal at Leers Weinzapfel Associates; Audrey Matlock, FAIA, principal at Audrey Matlock Architects; and Laura Starr, a partner at Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects & Planners. The jury was advised by Andrew Dolkart, who is the director of the Historic Preservation Program and professor of historic preservation at Columbia University.
Admission to the exhibition is free of charge. An opening reception will be held on Monday, March 2 from 6-8 p.m.
