For the first time since 1906, Milan is hosting the Universal Expo, which takes place every five years for a duration of six months. The exposition, based around this year’s theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” will “explore the importance of nutrition” and how humans play an integral role within the production and development, according to the event’s site. Though the 144 participating nations’ responses vary in form, they all repeat the same central ideas: health and sustainability. Despite civil unrest aimed at the fair for what protestors view as wastefulness, tourists and visitors alike marveled at the work provided by the nations’ representative designers. Take a look at what they captured during the fair’s first weekend.
