More than 300,000 low-income houses around the country have been weatherized using funds from the Recovery Act, the DOE announced Jan. 19. With that milestone, reached in November, the Weatherization Assistance Program is more than halfway toward President Obama’s goal of upgrading 600,000 homes.

According to the DOE, the home efficiency upgrades reduce energy consumption by about 35% per house and provide for an estimated annual savings of $161 million nationwide.

The agency also reports that the program has employed 15,000 workers.
