Berkeley Art Museum Closes in Mario Ciampi’s Brutalist Building

The UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive held a final hurrah on Sunday in its concrete building in Berkeley, Calif., where it has been since 1970. San Francisco–based architect Mario Ciampi, with Richard L. Jorasch and Ronald E. Wagner, designed a structure that San Francisco Chronicle‘s John King describes as “the Bay Area’s most emphatic example of Brutalism.” The museum is moving to a new downtown Berkeley building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, where it expects to reopen in 2016.
