Riverbend Elementary School, Yuba City, Calif.

1 MIN READ

This 89,000-square-foot (8268-m2) school features a sweeping silhouette, natural surfaces and colors, and myriad recycled materials and sustainable technologies. Most notably, the rooftop photovoltaic panels generate about 150,000 watts per day; this is enough electricity to satisfy about one-third of the daily needs of the school campus, which includes the permanent building and several modular buildings. Other environmental benefits in the main building include insulation and natural light. Translucent clerestory panels in the building’s exterior walls, which are taller than its interior walls, capture daylight and reduce the need for artificial lighting. The school’s green-building practices helped it exceed Title 24, Part 6, standards and it also is recognized by the San Francisco-based Collaborative for High Performance Schools.
