Behr has named Taupe its 2026 Exterior Stain Color of the Year, extending the recent run of soft, flexible neutrals positioned for outdoor wood surfaces. Blending brown and gray undertones, the shade is intended for decks, railings, and other exterior elements where designers and homeowners may want a finish that feels understated but not flat.
The selection arrives alongside Behr’s first Outdoor Accent Color Collection, a group of 18 exterior paint colors for smaller architectural moments such as entry doors, shutters, and trim. The palette includes darker shades such as Ocean Abyss and Rumors, brighter options including Unmellow Yellow and Flirt Alert, and earthier tones such as Muted Sage and Baronial Brown.

“Taupe brings a sense of harmony and balance to exterior spaces. Its calming presence fosters connection and transforms outdoor areas into serene, timeless retreats—making it a defining choice for 2026 and beyond,” says Kayla Kratz, senior director of color and design strategy at Behr Paint Company.
Behr also suggests the stain as a base tone that can be paired with warmer or cooler companion colors to pick out railings, trim, and decking borders without requiring a larger overhaul. That approach reflects a broader emphasis on targeted exterior updates rather than full-scale reworks.

Taupe will be available across several Behr exterior wood-stain products, and the stain color and accent collection will be sold exclusively through The Home Depot.
