The current president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Thomas Vonier, FAIA, has been elected as the new president of the United Nations–recognized, non-governmental architecture policy organization, the International Union of Architects. Created in 1948 and today based in Paris, the organization advocates for architectural design across the globe. According to an AIA spokesperson, Vonier’s presidency at the International Union of Architects began on Sept. 10, which means he will hold both posts until his term as AIA president concludes in December. Vonier previously served as the International Union of Architects’ secretary general.

“We must show the world how architecture can help to resolve the difficult issues facing society and our planet,” Vonier said, according to a press release. “The UIA is here to unify architects worldwide, influence global policies and outcomes, and advance the power of architecture to meet human needs.”
