FROM THE ARCHITECTS:
Founded in 2011 by Christopher Tepper and Paul Kelterborn with aims to recognize and preserve the ongoing history of the AIDS crisis, the NYC AIDS Memorial organization endeavors to design and construct a permanent living memorial that:
– Creates a beautiful tribute to acknowledge, commemorate and celebrate both those lost to AIDS and the leadership in the response to the crisis
– Provides a destination for family and friends to gather to remember those lost
– Creates a teaching opportunity for passing on facts and memories about the AIDS crisis
– Increases awareness and understanding of HIV/AIDS and a gateway for further learning through public programming
The NYC AIDS Memorial was designed by Brooklyn-based studio ai architects (Esteban Erlich, Lily Lim and Mateo Paiva). The monument’s 18-foot white canopy sculpture was fabricated in Argentina and assembled onsite, and stone fabricators in Cold Spring, Minnesota produced the memorial’s granite pavers with engraved artwork by world-renowned visual artist Jenny Holzer. This work includes selections from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself.
