Liansheng Financial Tower is located on two adjacent sites on Taiyuan’s Fen River, providing strong connections to public transportation, work, public events, and leisure within the city. The flow of the Fen River and the surrounding mountain ranges provide a formal reference for the interconnected two-tower building, a complex that includes offices, hotel, convention center, residences, and retail facilities. The form was inspired by the section footprint of a steel flange; the towers complement each other and act as one through their structural and infrastructural ensemble. Their innovative structure acts as a truss by placing the towers’ critical mass far apart from one another, spreading their base to withstand lateral loads.
