Herbert Mitchell Muschamp, formerly the architecture critic for The New York Times, died of lung cancer on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at the age of 59. He was born in Philadelphia on Nov. 28, 1947. Muschamp studied architecture at Parsons School of Design and architectural history and theory at London’s Architectural Association School of Architecture, and beginning in 1983, he taught at Parsons. He began writing as an architecture critic around the same time, going on to serve The New York Times as architecture critic from 1992 to 2004. Muschamp is survived by a sister and two brothers.
