The National Council of Architectural Registration Board’s annual survey documenting the number of registered architects in the United States, released Wednesday, counted a total of 105,596 licensed architects, representing a 1.2 percent increase over last year’s survey number of 104,301. The data, collected in August and reflecting the period between July 2011 and June 2012, also documented 118,004 reciprocal licenses, for a total of 223,600 registrations, an increase of 0.6 percent from last year’s survey. The data was collected from 54 registration boards around the country, including those in the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
West Virginia witnessed the biggest percentage increase of resident architects—16 percent—with its total of 107 licenses. California had the greatest increase in sheer numbers, going from 15,575 resident licenses to 16,298.
