Outfitted to commercial standards, this new kitchen also provides an uplifting environment that communicates freely with the house’s living spaces and its open waterfront site. “The client really does cook,” says architect William L. Kite Jr., “and she wanted a workable and functional kitchen—something open and welcoming, but also a very ‘defensible’ space.” The room’s vertical-grain fir ceiling rises to the west wall, where a preparation area with a deep stone-composite counter overlooks Narragansett Bay. To the east, a bank of fir cabinets with stainless steel doors and drawer fronts buffers the kitchen from the adjacent dining area and family room. Kick-space drawers help extract every available cubic inch of storage capacity. “In terms of space, material, and layout this is a winner,” declared one judge. “The quality of light really makes for a comfortable kitchen.”
