OMA to Design Marina Abramovic Institute in Upstate New York

1 MIN READ

OMA’s Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu will turn a former theater in upstate New York into a performance arts institute, Amy Frearson writes in Dezeen Magazine. The project, the Marina Abramovic Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art, is named after the Serbian artist who commissioned it and it will function as both a venue and an archive. In the spirit of performance art from the 1970s, some performance pieces may last for a few days. OMA is tasked with developing new types of furniture to enhance the audience’s comfort and viewing experience for these long-duration shows. “Performances hosted inside the building will last from between a few hours to a few days, so the architects will create bespoke chairs on wheels that can be moved to quiet areas when visitors fall asleep,” Frearson says.
