America’s Biggest Art Show: Art Basel Miami

The best exhibits from architects and designers at Miami's annual art fair

1 MIN READ

Since its inception in 2002, Art Basel Miami has grown to become America’s largest and most prestigious art fair, transforming the city into a major destination for gallery owners, artists, and collectors. With an estimated $2.5 billion worth of art on display from 260 galleries and over 2,000 artists, the fair now rivals its 41-year-old Swiss older brother, Art Basel. It has also spawned dozens of satellite shows, including Design Miami, which calls itself a showcase for “museum-quality exhibitions of 20th and 21st century furniture, lighting and objets d’art.” Both fairs evidence the increasing overlap between art, architecture, and interior design. At Art Basel Miami, for instance, works by Picasso, Modigliani, and Warhol mingle with structural marvels such as a steel chandelier by Daniel Libeskind, FAIA, that mimics the light of the cosmos. In the slideshow on the left, see our selection of the best works—art, architecture, furniture, light installations, and more—from both shows.
